Unusually Wide Binaries: Are They Wide or Unusual?

چکیده
We describe an astrometric and spectroscopic campaign to confirm the youth and association of a complete sample of candidate wide companions in Taurus and Upper Sco. Our survey found fifteen new binary systems (3 in Taurus and 12 in Upper Sco) with separations of 3-30 (500-5000 AU) among all of the known members with masses of 2.5-0.012 M⊙. The total sample of 49 wide systems in these two regions conforms to only some expectations from field multiplicity surveys. Higher-mass stars have a higher frequency of wide binary companions, and there is a marked paucity of wide binary systems near the substellar regime. However, the separation distribution appears to be log-flat, rather than declining as in the field, and the mass ratio distribution is more biased toward similar-mass companions than the IMF or the field G dwarf distribution. The maximum separation also shows no evidence of a limit at .5000 AU until the abrupt cessation of any wide binary formation at system masses of ∼0.3 M⊙. We attribute this result to the post-natal dynamical sculpting that occurs for most field systems; our binary systems will escape to the field intact, but most field stars are formed in denser clusters and do not. In summary, only wide binary systems with total masses .0.3 M⊙ appear to be “unusually wide”. Subject headings: stars:binaries:visual, stars:formation, stars:pre-main-sequence

Substellar Companions to Main-sequence Stars: No Brown Dwarf Desert at Wide Separations
We use three field L and T dwarfs that were discovered to be wide companions to known stars by the Two Micron All-Sky Survey to derive a preliminary brown dwarf companion frequency. Observed L and T dwarfs indicate that brown dwarfs are not unusually rare as wide ( AU) systems to F–M0 main-sequence stars D 1 1000 ( , ), even though they are rare at close separation ( AU; the “brown dwarf desert...
متن کاملWide binaries among high-velocity and metal-poor stars
A catalogue of 122 wide binaries is presented. The list was compiled by searching for common proper-motion companions to the more than 1200 high-velocity and metal-poor stars of Schuster and collaborators. We study the separations for the wide binaries (〈a〉 > 25 AU), and find that they follow Oepik’s distribution all the way up to 10 000 AU. A subgroup of them, the ones with the most halo-like ...
متن کاملX - ray binaries in the star cluster R 136 in the 30 Doradus region
We analyzed archival Chandra X-ray observations of the central portion of the 30 Doradus region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The image contains 20 X-ray point sources with luminosities between 5× 10 and 2× 10 erg s (0.2 – 3.5 keV). A dozen sources have bright WN Wolf-Rayet or spectral type O stars as optical counterparts. Nine of these are within ∼ 3.4 pc of R 136, the central star cluster of...
متن کاملBroker Genes in Human Disease
Genes that underlie human disease are important subjects of systems biology research. In the present study, we demonstrate that Mendelian and complex disease genes have distinct and consistent protein-protein interaction (PPI) properties. We show that five different network properties can be reduced to two independent metrics when applied to the human PPI network. These two metrics largely coin...
متن کاملUnusual Complete Isolated Scaphoid Dislocation, Report of a Case
Isolated scaphoid dislocations are extremely rare injuries and are commonly associated with significant ligamentousdisruptions. A dorsiflexion-supination force upon the hand is considered as the most common mechanism of injury.Different treatment options have been proposed for the management of this uncommon entity, ranging from conservativetreatment with closed reduction and casting to a wide ...
